According to John Clayton over at the World Wide Leader, the Lions have signed Daunte Culpepper.  Of course, this is a mind-boggling move and therefore suits the Lions perfectly.  Just when I was little happy about the team’s future now that they have cleaned house and look to make significant changes for the future, they pull a bonehead move like this.

The question is:  Why would they sign Culpepper?  He is an aging player, his best years behind him, the injuries that forced him to retire from football still a question.  I’ll tell you why.  It’s a fan grab.  For the first time in the history of Ford Field, the Lions did not sell out last week’s loss to Washington.  Thus, by NFL rule, the game was not broadcast on television in the Detroit area.  The average fan’s interest in this brutal team has to be low, and when they’re not on television, it’s even lower.  I watched a different game, took a nap, and listened to some of the inevitable loss on the radio.  I mean, what’s the point, right?

With likelihood high that the Lions will not sell out any of their remaining games (except Thanksgiving), the team had to make a move to regenerate interest in the 0-7 club.  And this is it.  Of course, this does nothing but stall any movement towards future success.  It’s a stop-gap to pique the waining interest of fans.  After offensive coordinator Jim Colletto stated this week that Drew Stanton is not getting a chance to start because he’s not ready and added that he’s (Colletto) “not going to embarrass the kid just to prove a point to somebody else”, any chance that we’d see anyone but Dan Orlovsky was dashed, crushing the hopes (albeit small hopes) that we’d see something positive on the field this season.

It’s a young team that is really going to have to rebuild in all aspects of the organization.  I haven’t given up on Stanton or Orlovsky...yet.  Let them play.  There really is no reason to sign an aging QB now and stunt their possible growth.

The Lions lost to the Texans in Houston on Sunday, 28-21, but the the game was not nearly as close as the score indicates.  Eight of those points came from a ridiculously long bomb from Dan Orlovsky to Calvin Johnson and the subsequent two point conversion.  This touchdown also made Orlovsky and Johnson’s stats seem decent, but when you take away that near hundred yards their days become pedestrian, if not bad.  Six more points were due to team MVP Jason Hanson hitting two 50+ yard bombs when the Lions failed to sniff the redzone.

The game started as all but one this season has, with the opponent coming out of the gate and dropping three scores upon a clueless Leo’s defense.  Then the Lions come back a bit as the team on the other side relaxes with their massive lead.  Then the Lions lose.  The season was over long ago, and some nice moves have been made for the future.  Marinelli and his staff must be next on the chopping block, though it doesn’t make too much sense to do it now with no suitable replacement waiting in the wings.

This Sunday our beloved losers take on the Redskins.  I’m predicting Clinton Portis goes from something like 300 yards and 2 TDs.  Redskins 38, Lions 20.

I really don’t want to mention the whole Brett Favrver thing, but there’s not really much else to say about this team.  This is such a non-story, but blown all over place because it’s ole’ number 4, so that’s all the analysis you get.  Speaking of things that are over blown; If Frank TV did an impression of Favre, then found Caylee, would that unmake existance?  Let me rip off The Jim Rome show real quick:  Make the world a better place, punch Nancy Grace in the face.

The Lions lost 12-10 in Minnesota on Sunday and looked like a reasonably competent team doing it, with the exception of Dan Orlovsky running into the bleachers for a saftey on a 3rd and 10 near the endzone (The endzone won Kissing Suzy Kolber’s “Meast of the Week").  The offense ran for 100 yards and had a decent average of 4.2 yards/carry.  Orlvosky, making his first start, didn’t do anything spectacular, but also didn’t make the big mistake (besides the saftey).  The defense looked determined and focused, recording 5 sacks and limiting Adrian “Purple Jesus” Peterson to a pedestrian day, when one could have easily imagined him going for 800+ yards and a billion touchdowns.  Yes, the Honolulu Blue warriors were hosed by some bad calls, particularly Calvin Johnson’s “fumble” and Leigh Bodden’s “pass interference”.  But I’m not going to blame the refs.  Believe it or not, I had a good taste in my mouth after the game, and no, it wasn’t due to that pita bread and wonderful garlic sauce from La Pita, I was really entertained and enjoyed watching this team for the first time this season, despite the loss.

As the week wore on, there was more good news.  The Lions hoodwinked the Cowboys into giving a 1st, 3rd, and 6th round draft pick for Roy Williams when the general consensus was that he would only garner a 2nd or 3rd.  But I guess if you’re Jerry Jones, and you’re a silver medalist in crazieness (Al Davis runs away with the gold), and you’re feeling very desperate after 1) losing to the Cardinals (d’oh!) 2) losing your star CB for four games after a fight with Blinky and 3) losing your QB for four weeks to a boo-boo, you might just make a move that defies all rational thought and makes Lions interim GM Martin Mayhew look like a freakin genius.

The Lions also placed Jon Kitna on the injured reserve list, ending his season and his career with the Lions.  It’s the right move.  Kitna is not going to win us a super bowl.  He’s a decent QB and had a time of success in Cincinnati as a starter and tutor to Carson Palmer, but the only way he’s winning anything is if he’s playing for the ‘85 Bears or the ‘00 Ravens.  This leaves Orlovsky and Drew Stanton as the future QBs of the Leos, for now.  Neither has really had the chance to show us what they’re made of, so the jury is still out on them.  At least it’s a move in the right direction.  Everybody knew Kitna, Matt Millen, and Rod Marinelli for that matter, were not taking us to the promised land.  Everybody knew...dogs knew, so any change has got to be the right move.

Published by roman at 07:00 AM

Roy Williams and a Lions 7th round pick have been traded to the Dallas Cowboys for a 1st, 3rd, and 6th round pick.  Nice move for the Lions to get quite a bit for a guy whose contract was up at the end of the year.  It was pretty much a given he wasn’t going to stay or be franchised by the Leos when we’ve already got a super fancy number one receiver in Calvin Johnson.

Also, Jon Kitna was placed on the injured reserve list with a bad back, ending his season, and the Kitna era in Detroit.  According to WDFN, if he wants to play again this season, he’ll have to be cut and catch on elsewhere.  Let the Orlovsky/Stanton era begin!!  Ahem.

Well, here it is.  Just what I didn’t want to write.  The Lions got their behinds kicked by the Bears on Sunday 34-7.  They showed nothing to garner any optimism for the rest of the season.  They were outplayed by the Bears in every facet of the game.  At home.  As far as I can tell, every Lions postgame analysis is going to be called “Wow, That Was Ugly Part _”.  Oh well, at least my fantasy team is 4-1.

I received a text message from a friend in the second quarter.  “I really can’t believe this game is this ugly.” I had no response.  I watched the game at a buddies house.  By the second half, the Lions were in the background and we were much more riveted by a Red Wings 2008 championship parade mash-up that included Jiri Hudler akwardly trying to rev up the crowd, the honorable Kwame Kilpatrick being mercilessly booed then trying to start the chant “Let’s go Wed Wings”, and Mike Ilitch sounding, well, drunk as he gave his speech.  It was the most entertaining part of the afternoon.  So rather than go on about the suck-tastic Leos, I’ll share it with you.  Video here
